Prior to becoming a resident of North Carolina, Mary A. Garvey was a life-long Chicagoan. Born and raised in Illinois, Mary received a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature from Benedictine University (formerly Illinois Benedictine College) with the intent to become a high school English teacher in the suburbs. She diverted her course of study and subsequently went on to receive her Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School (now known as University of Illinois Chicago Law – the only public law school in Chicago). Mary was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 2004 on the state and federal level. She then moved to North Carolina and was admitted to practice here in 2010. She is also admitted to practice in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Since moving to North Carolina, Mary found her niche in public service working for the State of North Carolina as a Criminal Magistrate, Deputy and Assistant Clerk of Superior Court, and Hearing Officer for the Forsyth County Clerk of Superior Court. She has also been an Adjunct Instructor at Forsyth Technical Community College teaching Criminology, Constitutional Law and Juvenile Justice.

In joining Whatley Law, Mary guides our clients through the court processes involving the loss of a loved one and those involving transitioning a loved one to care facilities and works in the areas of estate administration, incompetency/guardianships, minor guardianships, partitions of real property and judicial sales of property.

She is a member of the Kiwanis Club, the North Carolina Bar, the Illinois bar (inactive) and the Guilford County Bar (Greensboro). Mary enjoys family time with her partner, Ryan, and their son and loves to read.
